Publish your dissertation

The final step of your doctorate is the publication of your doctoral thesis at the University of Cologne. On this page you will find everything you need to know. If you have any questions, we will be happy to help you personally.

 

Submitting the dissertation

Digital

KUPS - Kölner UniversitätsPublikationsServer (Cologne University Publication Server) is the central university publication server for your open access publication. You can find out how you can publish here and what you should pay attention to in the extensive information and instructions on the KUPS website.

Printing

Privately printed deposit copies, i.e. dissertations that are not published by a publisher, must meet the following requirements:

  • printed on white, non-ageing paper (book or photo print)
  • hardback or bound (no ring stitching)
  • printed on both sides if possible (single-sided is also accepted)
  • preferably DIN A5 format (DIN A4 is also accepted)

After a formal check, we will confirm receipt of your dissertation at the doctoral office.

Acceptance times

You are welcome to bring your dissertation in person. Please make an appointment for this.

Dissertations can also be submitted by post. Please send your deposit copies to:

Notes

  • The basis for this is the current doctoral degree regulations of your faculty. They define the types of publication, the number of copies and formal requirements.
  • When publishing full texts on KUPS, an author contract is always required. Notes on the KUPS website
  • Files on KUPS must be in pdf or epub format.
  • We will send the confirmation of publication or submission of the deposit copies directly to the responsible doctoral office of your faculty.
  • File names on KUPS must not contain any special characters or umlauts.
  • Please note that shipping from non-EU countries is only possible if you have organized customs clearance in advance (your doctoral office may also be able to help here).
  • Unfortunately, we cannot provide advice on legal issues (e.g. copyright).
