Old stock of the library of the Cologne Higher Regional Court
The library of the Cologne Higher Regional Court is available to employees of the administration of justice in Cologne as well as to anyone working in the field of jurisprudence as a current service library, but it also has an older stock of books that is fed by various sources. In addition to the holdings acquired by the Higher Regional Court itself and its predecessor institution, the Court of Appeal, as early as the 19th century, older holdings have come into the library through acquisitions from dissolved court locations, but also through gifts and bequests.
The old holdings primarily comprise publications of the 18th and 19th centuries, but go back to the later 16th century. There are approximately 1,500 titles in just under 4,900 volumes; in addition to some anthologies, e.g. with old dissertations, there are numerous multi- to multi-volume works, which is typical for older legal literature. A strikingly large number of sole references to an edition in the North Rhine-Westphalia compound database may also be explained by the high proportion of French legal works of the 19th century. Here, the continued validity of the French Code Civil as "Rhenish law" in most of the Prussian Rhine Province obviously had an effect, which only came to an end with the introduction of the BGB in 1900, except for a few remaining holdings (for example, in neighborhood law). Non-legal literature plays practically no role in the holdings.
