National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)

"The aim of the national research data infrastructure (NFDI) is to systematically manage scientific and research data, provide long-term data storage, backup and accessibility, and network the data both nationally and internationally. The NFDI will bring multiple stakeholders together in a coordinated network of consortia tasked with providing science-driven data services to research communities."
German Research Foundation (DFG)

This is a new type of structure that is designed at right angles to the existing pillars of the science system. It is characterized by

  • a distributed, networked infrastructure for data producers and users
  • Service portfolios, which are organized along technical-thematic domains
  • a science-guided design

By 15 October 2019, more than 20 subject-related consortia had applied to the DFG in the first round of calls for proposals. In 2020, the first NFDI consortia will begin work alongside the NFDI Directorate in Karlsruhe.
