MDPI - Publisher of Open Access Journals
The University of Cologne is a member of the scientific publishing house MDPI.
Members of the University of Cologne and the University Hospital of Cologne receive a 30% discount on the publication fee. Invoices are received centrally by the USB Cologne on a monthly basis. A minimum fee of € 600.00 and a maximum fee of € 1,500.00 will be charged for authors affiliated with the hospital/faculty of medicine. Please contact us in good time to find out about the costs incurred. The costs of the other faculties will be covered centrally, whereby third-party funds for (partial) financing will be requested from the USB Cologne. This regulation is valid until December 2026.
The University Library has been approached internally and externally with concerns about the reliability of the publishing house MDPI. The publisher is extremely focused on growth and fast publication processes. Nevertheless, a large number of MDPI journals are listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals. The DOAJ is generally recognized as a whitelist for quality-checked open access journals. It is used globally for formal checks when funding articles or searching for open access journals. Therefore, please carefully check the MDPI journal you have selected before submitting and, in the case of Open Access funding, clarify the financing of your own contribution with the Journals Open Access team in advance.
