1. Jucknies, Regina: Heinrich Erkes (1864 - 1932). Kölner Kaufmann, Kenner Islands und kluger Bibliothekar

Köln 2010, 16 S., ISBN 978-3-931596-52-1, € 5,00

With the offprint of Regina Jucknies' lecture, the USB honours the founder of the Islandica Collection Heinrich Erkes (1864-1932). As a merchant, Heinrich Erkes used his trade connections to collect a rich stock of Icelandic literature from Iceland itself and other countries. Of particular importance is the large stock of old prints and of Icelandic periodicals and newspapers. Heinrich Erkes was a great friend of the distant island of Iceland. He himself travelled there nine times and wrote numerous articles about the geography and geology of Iceland, as well as the current economic and political conditions. When the Association of Friends of Iceland was founded in March 1913, he was one of the founding members. After he got a job as a scientific librarian at the newly founded University and City Library in Cologne in 1920, he gradually donated his Iceland collection of about 6000 volumes to the library.

The lecture was given on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of his death on 13 December 2007 at the University and City Library to members of the German-Icelandic Society and the Cologne Library Society, as well as guests from the Institute for Scandinavian Studies. He described the exciting career of the friend of Iceland from merchant to important politician and committed librarian and described the uniqueness of his collection.

Dr. Regina Jucknies is a research assistant at the Institute of Scandinavian Studies.
