Library card: order, pick up and extend
You are eligible to receive a library card upon providing proof of residence in Germany. Please note: You can only pass through our gateway with a valid library card.

Picking up a library card after online submission or sent to you by letter
You can pick up your library card at the Registration & Interlibrary Loans return counter (Bibliotheksausweise & Fernleihrückgabe) on the ground floor in the main library directly after submission of the online form. (Service hours)
Important! Please bring the required documents with you when picking up the library card:
- Personal identification, which provides proof of residence in Germany, as well as a registration certification (Meldesbescheinigung) or residence permit from the Citizens Registration Office (Bürgeramt)
- Students from other universities: Student ID card
- Employees of the University of Cologne: Proof of employment (pdf, 88KB)
- Pupils: Pupils card
- Minors or underage individuals: Declaration of consent (pdf, 9KB) from a parent or legal guardian, together with personal identification (copy) of this parent or legal guardian
- Exemption from the yearly fee (pdf, 71KB)

Renewal of library card
Renew your existing cards by sending an (Ortsleihe).

Please bring photo ID and 10 Euro.
We offer:
- Borrowing of print media - (from the main department, Department of Human Sciences and the Joint Specialized Libraries)
- For members of the UCL(employees, second listeners, guest listeners): Access to our e-media from home. All you need is your student account or employee account and free additional software (VPN client).

For external users (e.g. students of private universities, students of public universities of the state of NRW, private persons, pupils ...) this is not possible:
- Use of electronic media from home
