Publication Fund for Monographs

We support you in financing your Open Access monographs and work closely with university administration to do so. All funded monographs, anthologies, and articles in anthologies are permanently archived on the Cologne University Publications Server (KUPS) and made available online.

Information on Financing

Eligible for funding are monographs, anthologies, dissertations, and articles in anthologies from the Faculty of Human Sciences, the Faculty of Philosophy, and the Faculty of Law. Dissertations are eligible for funding only if they have received the highest honors (summa cum laude and magna cum laude), subject to consultation with the faculty. Please send proof of this to: monografienoa(at)ub.uni-koeln(dot)de.

How much is the grant?

  • For the publication of Open Access monographs, anthologies, and dissertations, a maximum of 3,000 € (including 19% VAT) per publication may be funded from the Open Access Monograph Fund.
  • For the publication of Open Access articles in anthologies a maximum of 1,500 € (including 19% VAT) per publication can be funded from the Open Access Monograph Fund.
  • Any costs exceeding the grant amount must be covered by the applicant’s own funds.
  • The approved funds are available for three months from the date of receipt of the positive funding decision. If we have not received the invoice by that time, a new application must be submitted.

What funding criteria must be met?

  • All members of the University of Cologne who publish as corresponding authors and list the University of Cologne as their primary affiliation are eligible to apply. Please adhere to the University of Cologne’s publication guidelines.
  • This must be a first publication.
  • Dual funding of content is not permitted (e.g., a paid article in an anthology based on a dissertation or monograph that has already received funding).
  • Publications subject to an embargo (delayed open access) are excluded from funding.
  • The publisher’s offer is available and is attached.
  • The publisher applies the quality assurance procedures (peer review) recognized in the respective field.
  • The publisher is listed as an open-access publisher in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) or the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA).
  • Please always indicate your third-party funding in the “Funding Acknowledgments” section.
  • Please use the standardized funding acknowledgment: “This publication was produced at the University of Cologne and was funded by the University of Cologne’s Open Access Publication Fund.”
  • The authors must license the publication in a way that ensures the legal validity of its reuse. The DFG recommends CC-BY or CC-BY-SA as the standard.
  • The use of identifiers such as ISBN, ISSN, or DOI is mandatory.

How do I apply for funding?

  • Please submit your application for coverage of publication costs via the Publication Costs App.
  • In addition to the publisher’s proposal—which must be sent to monografienoa(at)ub.uni-koeln(dot)de for every grant—please also submit proof of your grade to this address for dissertations.

How do I upload my dissertation to KUPS?

Once the USB has received the publisher’s invoice for the publication of your dissertation, we will notify you, and you must then enter your dissertation into KUPS:

  • After registering on KUPS, you will see the “Manage Publications” section under the “My Account” menu item.
  • Select “New Entry, then choose “Academic Publication” as the publication type and “Dissertation” as the type of academic publication.
  • Please enter all the information you have available. This includes:
    • the bibliographic data,
    • an abstract (in German or English),
    • at least one keyword of your choice.
  • In the “Open Access Funding” field, please select the option “UzK Publication Fund.”
  • Finally, confirm your entry by clicking “Accept Terms and Release Entry for Review.” You may ignore any error message regarding the missing full text.
  • We will upload the full text after publication. If necessary, we will then make corrections or additions to the information.

Please also submit the author agreement, completed and signed by you, via email to: monografienoa(at)ub.uni-koeln(dot)de
