Department of Human Sciences (HWA)
The HWA is part of the University and City Library and is located in the main building of the Faculty of Human Sciences.
It provides the Faculty of Human Sciences with literature from the collection areas of education, psychology, rehabilitation science, sociology of childhood and adolescence and didactics. The collection comprises around 100,000 monographs, including more than 10,000 copies of textbooks, 1,200 journal titles, including 100 current subscriptions and over 400 psychological test procedures.
Note on borrowing
You can now book media yourself in the Human Sciences Department:
- Ordered media can be found on our collection shelves.
- You can borrow your media from the lending machines.
- Returns are possible via the book slot.
- Please note the HWA opening hours.
Order first - then collect
Most of the stock is stored and can be ordered via the uni-catalog. Orders placed before 3 p.m. are made available on our pick-up shelves within an hour, orders placed after 3 p.m. are made available the next day.

- Textbooks available for loan can be requested from our stacks via the Universitätskatalog aus.

- Introductory literature
- Reference copies of the most frequently requested textbooks (including special education)
- Journals covering all humanities subjects except special education. Volumes from 2000 onward are available on open shelves in the reading room. Older volumes from the stacks can be obtained at the reading room desk.

Testothek
The Testothek is a joint initiative of the USB and the Faculty of Human Sciences.
Note
Use of the approximately 400 psychological test procedures is restricted to members and affiliates of the university and is subject to specific conditions (Benutzungsordnung,Verpflichtungserklärung Test, Verpflichtungserklärung Verbrauchsmaterial).
Ordering
- Testverfahren und Verbrauchsmaterial können im Universitätskatalog über ein Formular bestellt werden.
- If you require larger quantities of consumables, please contact us via email as early as possible. It may take up to 14 days for us to process your order: E-Mail.
- Tests can be picked up and returned at the counter in the Lesesaal Humanwissenschaft: Mon–Fri 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
Check-out & Return
Check-out
- Orders placed by 3 p.m. will be ready for pickup within an hour; orders placed after 3 p.m. will be ready the next day.
You will receive an email as soon as your items are ready. - The loan period is generally 4 weeks from the date of check-out. Renewals and holds are available.
Returns
- Items may only be returned at the HWA. Please use the book drop at the circulation desk. Alternatively, you may return items by mail.
- Note: Please return psychological tests only at the counter in the Lesesaal Humanwissenschaft.
Media for use in the Humanities Reading Room
Items published before 1945, journal volumes from the stacks, and unbound materials can only be requested in the Humanities Reading Room. You can scan these items there free of charge.
Once ordered, these materials will be available for you at the reading room counter for on-site use. You will receive a reminder when the loan period (8 weeks) expires and the books are returned to the stacks. Please let us know if you no longer need the books before the loan period expires, so we can make them available to others sooner. Contact: hwa-lstheke@ub.uni-koeln.de
