Open Access Monographs| Publication Fund of the UoC
We support you in funding your Open Access monographs and work closely with the university management. All funded monographs, edited volumes and articles in edited volumes are permanently archived on the Cologne University Publication Server (KUPS) and made accessible online.
Which publications are eligible for funding?
- Monographs, edited volumes, dissertations and articles in edited volumes from the Faculty of Human Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Law are eligible for funding.
- Dissertations are only eligible for funding with top marks after consultation with the faculty (summa cum laude and magna cum laude).

How much funding is available?
- A maximum of €3,000 (incl. 19% VAT) per publication can be funded from the Open Access Monographs Fund for the publication of Open Access monographs, edited volumes and dissertations.
- For the publication of Open Access articles in edited volumes, a maximum of €1,500 (incl. 19% VAT) per publication can be funded from the Open Access Monographs Fund.
- Anything in excess of the funding amount must be financed from your own resources.
- The approved funds are available for three months from receipt of the positive funding decision. If the process has not been completed by then, a new application must be submitted.
Which funding criteria must be met?
- All members of the University of Cologne who publish as a corresponding author and list the UoC as their primary affiliation are eligible to apply. Please adhere to the publication guidelines of the University of Cologne.
- This is a first publication.
- Double funding of content is excluded (e.g. article in an edited volume from an already funded dissertation/monograph).
- Publications with an embargo (delayed open access) are excluded from funding.
- The publisher's offer has been submitted and is attached.
- The publisher applies the recognized quality assurance procedures (peer review) in the respective subject.
- The publisher is listed as an Open Access publisher in theDirectory of Open Access Books (DOAB) or theOpen Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA).
- Please always indicate your third-party funding in "Funding Acknowledgements".
- Please use the standardized funding reference: "This publication was created at the University of Cologne and was funded by the Open Access Publication Fund of the University of Cologne".
- The authors must provide the publication with a license that regulates the subsequent use of the publication in a legally secure manner. The DFG recommends CC-BY or CC-BY-SA as the standard.
- The use of identification, e.g. ISBN, ISSN or DOI, is mandatory.
How do I apply for funding?
- Please submit your application for publication costs via the publication costs app.
- In addition to the publisher's offer, which must be sent to monografienoa
ub.uni-koeln.de for each grant, please also submit proof of the grade for dissertations to this address.
How do I upload my dissertation to KUPS?
After the USB has received the invoice for the publication of your dissertation from the publisher, you will be notified by us and you must then register your dissertation on KUPS:
- After registering, you will see the "Manage publications" section in the "My account" menu item.
- Select "New entry" and then " Dissertation" as the publication form and "Dissertation" as the type of dissertation.
- Please enter all the information you have. This includes
- the bibliographic data,
- an abstract (in German or English),
- at least one freely chosen keyword.
- In the "Open Access funding" field, please select the option "Publication fund UzK".
- Finally, confirm the entry by clicking on "Accept conditions and release entry for review". You can ignore a possible error message regarding the missing full text.
- The full text will be uploaded by us after publication. If necessary, we will then make corrections or additions to the information.
