+++ February 2021: Crown caps become vaccinations +++
The blue bag has it all: At the beginning of February, our first collection of crown corks was collected by Alexandra Rybarski (on the left in the photo), the initiator of BlechWech. With 32.903 kg, we were able to contribute the first 36 vaccinations to this project. Alexandra Rybarski, who completed her Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the University of Cologne, is currently working on her dissertation at the Institute of Zoology. The fact that she still finds time and energy to organise and carry out the BlechWech project alongside her doctoral thesis impressed us greatly!
"Have you ever wondered how many crown caps are carelessly thrown away that could actually do so much good?" - with this question she started her campaign in 2018.
Since then, Blechwech has collected 25.476 tonnes of crown caps, which are now no longer lying in our streets and parks or ending up in the residual waste. The proceeds have enabled 33,630 vaccinations to be given to these project partners:
- 2018/2019: SOS Clinic Monrovia, Liberia
- 2020: SOS Mother and Child Clinic in Mogadishu, Somalia
Many thanks to Ms Rybarski for her extraordinary achievement and to everyone who has been diligently collecting over the last few months!
We are now an official collection point of the Blechwech initiative!
You can find detailed information about the initiative on the website: www.blechwech.de

+++ 08.10.2020: Feedback on our survey "Sustainability in Libraries" +++
Many thanks to everyone who took the trouble to write to us!
- We received questions about the university's carbon footprint and whether there are plans to switch to green electricity throughout the university. This is covered in a press release from the university dated 19.06.2020 >>.
- We were also made aware of YouTopia - an idea of the Cologne doctoral student and Youtuber Jakob Beautemps from the Youtube channel Breaking Lab. The almost 5-day livestream he created under the motto "Together for the environment!", in which donations were collected for reforestation projects, is unfortunately already over, but under this link you can watch the playlist of all participants on the topic of sustainability, environmental protection, etc. >>
+++ 07.10.2020: Collecting crown caps for a good cause +++
Shortly before the end of the Sustainability Action Days 2020 - and even beyond - we are collecting for a good cause: From now on, you can throw crown caps into a tin can in our foyer. The crown caps will then be sent by parcel to the Cologne initiative blechwech.de on a frequent basis. The Cologne initiative "blechwech.de" collects under the slogan "1 crown cap weighs 1.9g. - to let a child inoculate, we need only 890 g.". The proceeds go to an SOS clinic in Liberia.
We are already collecting diligently - join us!
