You would like to publish in a journal that asks for Article Processing Charges? Here you can get an overview of the publishers and publication portals that do not charge members of the University of Cologne or offer discounts on APCs.
We have agreements with the following publishers and publication portals:
- American Physiological Society - Through the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model, members of the University of Cologne/University Hospital Cologne can publish free of charge in the following seven “American Journal of Physiology” journals: -Cell Physiology, -Endocrinology and Metabolism, -Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, -Heart and Circulatory Physiology, -Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology, -Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology.
- American Society for Microbiology (ASM) - Through the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model, members of the University of Cologne/University Hospital Cologne can publish free of charge in the following journals: “Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy”, “Applied and Environmental Microbiology”, “Infection and Immunity”, “Journal of Bacteriology”, “Journal of Clinical Microbiology” and “Journal of Virology”.
- Annual Reviews - Starting in 2023, APCs will no longer apply to open access publications in the Annual Reviews portfolio of journals due to subscribe-to-open.
- Berghahn - Through subscribe-to-open, the APCs for the three Berghahn journals of ethnology are waived upon open access publication: “Environment and Society”, “Social Analysis: The International Journal of Cultural and Social Practice”, “The Cambridge journal of anthropology” and “Social Anthropology”.

- Muse-Premium-Zeitschriften - The University of Cologne allows its members to publish free of charge using the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model. You can find the title list here.
- National Academy of Sciences - 15% discount on the APP for an open access publication in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America” (PNAS)
- OLH - Open Library of Humanites (no publication fee)
- PLOS - Public Library of Science (no publication fee)
- Portland Press - Through the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model, members of the University of Cologne/University Hospital Cologne can publish free of charge in the two journals “Biochemical Journal” and “Biochemical Society Transactions”.
